Five of these letters, written at Jerusalem about the year B. It figures in Assyrian inscriptions under the name of Ur-sa-li-im-mu. According to the Assyrian syllabaries, uru and ur signify “city” Hebrew ir. In several of the Tell Armana Tablets the word salim is used in the sense of “peace”. Ursalim, therefore, means “City of Peace”. The Psalmist, too, connects Salem with Sion: When the Israelites came into the Land of Promise, Jerusalem was in the power of the Jebusites, and bore the name of Jebus. The Hebrews, however, were not ignorant of its ancient name; they often called it Jerusalem Joshua

Greek Painting of the Hellenistic Period c. Some Background Since the 18th century, Greek sculpture has been the object of something akin to idolatry, and only recently have we been able to put it more in context. This is not to say that sculpture was the only form of Greek art generally appreciated, but the widespread success of books by Johann Joachim Winckelmann , followed in by that of Lessing’s Laocoon, with its extensive theorization of the famous Vatican group, Laocoon and His Sons BCE , served to focus interest on sculpture.

It is mainly in connection with sculpture that we have tended to speak of “the Classical beauty of Greece”. It is sculpture that is currently held to be the most representative and indeed the most excellent of the arts of ancient Greece. And it is an art with which we have the good fortune to be particularly well acquainted.

In a landmark performance, Oscar nominee John Malkovich (In the Line of Fire, ) stars as Professor David Lurie, whose world is shattered when he is fired for seducing a college student.

It supplied cult figures of gods, dedications in sanctuaries, monuments to stand above graves, architectural decorations, and eventually statues and reliefs for wealthy private houses. Of all this relatively little remains: The reason was not usually religious zeal, but the value of marble as raw material for lime and of bronze for scrap, so that in order to survive, sculpture had to be out of sight and reach.

Thus, what we now have is a sample unevenly distributed in time, type and quality. Architectural sculpture, while still in place, was not likely to be removed and, when the building collapsed, might be buried under a mass of masonry. Independent reliefs, especially gravestones, were liable to fall down and, if covered over, be forgotten; and any slab carved in low relief could be reused as a structural block.

Free-standing statues had poorer chances, since they were less likely to be hidden sufficiently by debris, especially in populous places. Metal, of course, was worth digging for and so less than a score of Greek bronzes have turned up that are reasonably complete, several of them dredged up from the sea. As for marble, works from the Archaic period survived best; being less admired it was less carefully conserved by later Greeks and Romans and so could be lost before the period of destruction set in, and there is also the big cache from the Acropolis of Athens where much of the statuary which the Persians broke in was used as in-fill during the restoration that followed.

At the other end, Roman art provides us with a surfeit of copies of popular Greek sculptures from both the Classical and Hellenistic eras. These copies, some Late Hellenistic but more of them Roman, hinder as well as help the enjoyment and study of Greek sculpture. Though the copyists fixed points by measurement, the points were much sparser than those used in modern practice and the intervening spaces and the details were carved freehand and usually without much care, as can be seen when comparing different reproductions of the same original.

In general copies are fairly reliable for pose, but mostly so harsh and insensitive in their treatment of surface that they more often repel than interest the unprejudiced viewer; and with the finer examples there is the problem whether the copyists may not also have been creative. Unfortunately very few first-rate Classical stautues or ones from the Hellenistic period of Greek sculpture have survived in the original and those that are known through copies are far more numerous, so that copies are an essential reference in any stylistic survey of Greek sculpture.

History[ edit ] The first professional civilian bomb squad was established by Sir Vivian Dering Majendie. In , he framed The Explosives Act , the first modern legislation for explosives control. After Victoria Station was bombed on 26 February he defused a bomb with a clockwork mechanism which might have gone off at any moment. Known as the “Italian Squad”, its primary mission was to deal with dynamite bombs used by the Mafia to intimidate immigrant Italian merchants and residents.

It would later be known as the “Anarchist Squad” and the “Radical Squad”. Bomb Disposal became a formalized practice in the First World War. The swift mass production of munitions led to many manufacturing defects, and a large proportion of shells fired by both sides were found to be “duds”. In , the Germans developed delayed-action fuzes that would later develop into more sophisticated versions during the s, as Nazi Germany began its secret course of arms development. These tests led to the development of UXBs unexploded bombs , pioneered by Herbert Ruehlemann of Rheinmetall , and first employed during the Spanish Civil War of — Such delayed-action bombs provoked terror in the civilian population because of the uncertainty of time, and also complicated the task of disarming them.

The Germans saw that unexploded bombs caused far more chaos and disruption than bombs that exploded immediately. This caused them to increase their usage of delayed-action bombs in World War II.

Most ancient pottery Man the hunter theories are prone to stress male violence and treat women as mere possessions and tradeable items. While they do fit well with our cultural paradigm of male dominance, they do not well-explain the origin of intelligence p 53 , nor do they fit well with what we know of so-called primal cultures, where women bring in the majority of the diet by gathering p , making them more autonomous as child-rearers than the theory would allow. The counterpoised matriarchal origin theory is the ‘mother-right’ proposed by Johan Jakob Bachofen R31 – an evolutionary ‘advance’ in which an intervening stage of matriarchy led society out of barbarism into modern patriarchy, which he deemed the triumph of superior political and religious thought and organization, despite advocating the incorporation of the ‘feminine principle’ of nurturance and altruism in modern society.

The Swiss philologist proposed an era of ‘unregulated hetaerism’ in which women were sexually degraded and defenseless, followed by an ‘Amazon’ revolt that inaugurated an era of matriarchy.
